The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) is a common bug found in South Carolina. It has not been around as long as many other types of bugs but found in 1998 is certainly long enough to now show its wide presence in SC.
If you are wondering if you have stink bugs in your home or business they are 12 to 17 mm long, have long straight antennas with white striped bands, a shield shape, and are mottled brown in color.
So, what is their habitat? They are considered agricultural pests but that does not stop them from being found in homes and businesses. They are most often found inside when seeking shelter from the cold. They seek warmth in walls, attics, crawl spaces, and other tight spaces until they emerge again in the spring.
Stink bugs are not known to be a health hazard however, on rare occasions, to people who are allergic dermatological symptoms can occur. This happens when a stink bug emits a fluid when threatened. Though this is uncommon symptoms such as itchy eyes, runny nose, tearing, and skin irritation can occur. highly allergic to the fluid they produce when defending themselves. When exposed it is highly recommended to quickly wash with soap and water.
But in an overview of stink bugs, you by no means want them sharing your space with you cos they can be smelly as well.
